This training will increase participants’ knowledge in identifying problem gambling behavior and integrating that awareness into recovery support services and the treatment process. For those with – or at risk for developing – gambling disorders recovery support services are an integral part of a recovery-oriented system of care. We will discuss recovery support services, offer suggestions as to who can offer them, and discuss how services can be integrated into both the recovery and clinical communities.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Participants will learn to identify the warning signs & risk factors of gambling disorder.
  2. Participants will learn about the similarities and differences between gambling disorders and substance use disorders.
  3. Participants will learn to recognize the co-occurring factors that can exist for persons with gambling disorders.
  4. Participants will explore the barriers to recovery (including relapse), recovery pathways and recovery supports.
  5. Participants will identify resources for assessment, referrals and resources.

Jodie Nealley, MS joined the Massachusetts Council on Compulsive Gambling in the fall of 2012 where she works as the Recovery & Outreach Coordinator in the Programs Department. She received her B.A. from St. Lawrence University, her Master of Science in Education from Indiana University and is a graduate of the UMass/Boston Addiction Counselor Education Program. Her life experience both in and out of the professional arena provides unique skill sets and insight into her role at the council.
